Former developer for Rockstar North, Obbe Vermeji revealed that Rockstar Games were once working on a zombie survival game that would be set on a remote Scottish island before he was shut down by Rockstar North.
Vermeij made quite a lengthy blog post that has now been removed about a plan to develop and produce a zombie game using Vice City's code. This was a concept that had been reportedly circulated around Rockstar North for a month back in 2002.
It has been said by Vermeij that artists for Rockstar North wanted to produce a zombie game at the time and their reason for wanting to do so was because "artists like zombies, not sure why that is". He further explained that the goal was to take the code from Vice City and reshape it to create a zombie game that would be set on an abandoned Scottish island and would have an eerie feel to it. The island would be under siege and suffering constant attacks from the undead.
The plan was to allow players the ability to use vehicles to move around the island and that the key to survival was to ensure that you were always constantly moving. This would make vehicles a cherished resource which the player would constantly have to look out for.
The concept was soon quashed as all involved felt that the idea would be 'too depressing' and instead, they set their minds on the next GTA title which of course, ended up being San Andreas.
The zombie survival concept was not all lost though, as it managed to surface again when Rockstar Games released their Undead Nightmare Expansion for Red Dead Redemption
Still, knowing now that we could have had a zombie survival mode from Rockstar does get you thinking of what might have been had they gone through with the idea.
